When we type an address like www.dedicatedhosting4u.com in our browser address bar, the computer doesn’t know where dedicatedhosting4u.com points to and it will therefore ask the DNS server.

The work of a DNS server is to decode this human-readable web address (like www. dedicatedhosting4u.com) into a computer-readable number also known as an IP address. Once our computer identifies the IP location of a web domain name, it opens the website in our browser.

DNS is such an essential part of our Internet life working following the scenes every time we connect to a website.
if the DNS server of our ISP is slow, we look at an easy and consistent service called OpenDNS that speeds up our Internet connection and also handles some other very important issues. There are no software to install, it’s very easy to set up and it’s free.

To apply OpenDNS, all we have to do is open our Network Connections or Router’s settings page and update the default DNS server to point to the OpenDNS name servers that are 201.63.221.223 and 205.68.224.226.

The full process takes a few seconds but with this single step alone, we just made our computer safer and increased the overall browsing speed.

Advantages

1. Unlike the DNS servers of our less reliable ISP, OpenDNS servers store the IP addresses of millions of websites in their cache so it would take less time to resolve our requests. So if we have asked for an IP address of a website that has been previously requested by another OpenDNS user, we will get the reply instantly.

2. Another main advantage of using OpenDNS is that it blocks malware websites from loading on our computer. It utilizes data from Phishtank, a community site that is also used by Yahoo! Mail to determine if some particular website is part of any online phishing scam.

3. OpenDNS also takes care of any typos that we place while typing the name of popular websites. For instance, if we type www.gogle.com omitting the additional “o” by mistake, OpenDNS will open the main www.google.com site automatically.

4. We can configure OpenDNS to block any website from loading on the computer. In fact, quite a some business places use OpenDNS to block social sites like MySpace,Twitter and Facebook on employee computers.

5. Power users can allocate short forms or OpenDNS Shortcuts to access their preferred websites more quickly.

For example, we can set “mailg” as a shortcut for http://mail.google.com/ or something like “d” for www.dedicatedhosting4u.com – just type the shortcut to access the website.

OpenDNS only advances the sequence between our computer and the DNS server. When OpenDNS system goes down or we want to disable / remove OpenDNS fully from our computer.

OpenDNS is a private DNS server. OpenDNS is an IP address that we add to our network configuration under the DNS tab.

OpenDNS provides quicker and more reliable DNS services than any other DNS provider. You'll get to your desired website faster with OpenDNS, and you'll never have to deal with outages like you would with an ISP's DNS service.
